ABOUT THE SOCIETY AND ITS MEETING
The European Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases (ESPID) is a non-profit medical association that focuses on paediatric infectious diseases (PID). Since its foundation in 1983, it has grown to include approximately 1180 members mostly from Europe and increasingly from other continents.
ESPID forms a platform for clinicians and scientists interested in clinical aspects, education, training and research concerning infectious diseases in children, including diagnosis, treatment and prevention with a particular focus on vaccination.
The society is engaged in a large number of activities including collaboration in multicentre trials and projects for surveillance of antimicrobial consumption and resistance in children, international exchange of paediatric infectious disease fellows, educational activities and it organises the leading global annual scientific Meeting in PID. ESPID is also engaged in various partnerships with international organisations such as ECDC, WHO, patient organisations such as CoMO and sister organisations such as ESID, EAP, PIDS, ESWI and WSPID. ESPID provides the opportunity to its members and participants in the Meeting to get involved in research networks.
ESPID OBJECTIVES
Information exchange
ESPID aims to promote the exchange of information among people who have special experience in the field of PID by organising regular scientific meetings, collaborating and facilitating the formation of international study groups and networks, participating in advisory boards of other societies, organising symposia at other international meetings, and by supporting joint publications by members in the Paediatric Infectious Diseases Journal.
Support for independent PID units
To support the formation and function of independent units (e.g. sections, departments, divisions) in order to encourage progress in the field of infectious diseases in childhood (as a member of the European Board for Paediatrics and by formulation of criteria and programmes for training in the field of PID). Training and further education in the field of infectious diseases and research, particularly basic research, as well as clinical care are given priority.
Co-operative studies
To support and promote co-operative studies in Europe in the fields of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infection in childhood and have partnerships with major existing European research networks and European governmental bodies in the field of PID.
Education
To provide higher and continuing education in the field of PID by organising meetings for this purpose including the annual scientific meeting, training courses, educational workshops and on-line courses, offering small grants, fellowships and travel awards, maintaining a website that publishes or provides links to educational materials from the Meeting and other ESPID-sponsored activities for the benefit of the community of PID specialists and other interested professionals, including giving access to full text articles on paediatric vaccines & vaccine preventable diseases.
To develop and publish guidelines and position papers on PID issues in order to disseminate authoritative evidence-based opinion and guidance on topics of interest and clinical importance and to stimulate discussions thus improving the health of children and the prevention of infectious diseases.
Annual General Meeting (AGM)
In compliance with the articles describing the constitution of ESPID, an AGM of members is convened to communicate with the members, to solicit their views and ideas about the running of the society and to confirm their support for the work of the elected and appointed Officers.
